National Summit for Principal Supervisors

School district leaders, education service providers, colleges and universities from across the nation will share programs, initiatives, products and services practices that support the work of principal supervisors.

Two types of presentations are scheduled and will be delivered in the format of concurrent sessions:

Panel Presentations

Comprised of up to three presenters from different districts, colleges, and/or partner organizations who will present similar topics

  • Presenters are to limit formal presentations to approximately 15 minutes as each session will only run for 60 minutes. This will encourage discussion between presenters and participants.
  • Our goal is to maximize the sharing of important ideas and information.
  • All rooms will be arranged conference-style to facilitate discussion.
  • Individuals and groups are encouraged to submit proposals in areas that focus on informing the audiences according to the conference strands identified in the tabs on the left.

Breakout Sessions

Form the core of the conference and feature a successful practice, program, or key issue

  • Presenters use active learning techniques to engage participants.
  • Breakout sessions may be presented by multiple presenters with approximately 45 minutes for presentations. This will allow time for discussion between presenters and participants.
  • Our goal is to maximize the sharing of important ideas and information.
  • All rooms will be arranged conference-style to facilitate discussion.
  • Individuals and groups are encouraged to submit proposals in areas that focus on informing the audiences according to the conference strands identified in the tabs on the left.


Roles of Principal Supervisors

Target Audience: Superintendents, District Administration, Principal Supervisors, and Principals

Effective Deployment of Principal Supervisors

(Panel Presentation)

Description: Experts in the field of educational leadership and reform, including district leaders, discuss how they have developed Principal Supervisors and aligned district resources to support strategic initiatives. Presenters are encouraged to discuss topics, such as span of control and expertise and skills matching.

Defining the Role of Principal Supervisor

(Breakout Session)

Description: This session provides districts an opportunity to understand and define the role of Principal Supervisor and what districts can do to make the role more clear and effective.

Balancing the Principal Supervisor Role as Coach and Evaluator

(Breakout Session)

Description: This session helps Principal Supervisors determine when and how to balance their role as coach and evaluator.

Juggling Multiple Roles

(Breakout Session)

Description: This session takes a look at the cross section of responsibilities of the Principal Supervisors, from administrative to operational leader. It teaches how to juggle the constant demands of priorities while ensuring adequate time is spent with principals to impact the quality of teaching and learning. It also addresses the need for district staff to balance their time between schools considered high needs versus high performing.

Capacity Building

Target Audience: Superintendents, District Administration, Principal Supervisors, and Principals

Building a Better Bench

(Panel Presentation)

Description: This session focuses on the role of human resources and capital. Are districts doing enough to strengthen the principal pipeline?

Building Effective Layers of Support

(Breakout Session)

Description: This session provides an opportunity for district staff and Principal Supervisors to hear from other districts as to how they use and align resources and support staff to provide multi-faceted support for both new and experienced principals.

Employing Better Learning through Structured Teaching

(Breakout Session)

Description: This session teaches Principal Supervisors how to help their principals identify key challenges in low performing schools or classrooms where student achievement data shows student performance on targeted indicators are consistently declining.

Better Support for Principals in High Need Schools with Special Populations

(Breakout Session)

Description: This session helps Principal Supervisors, with a focus on leveraging resources within the district, support high need schools with special populations.

Developing Indicators of School Improvement

(Breakout Session)

Description: This session focuses on specific look-fors to support principals around key performance indicators and establishing a preliminary plan at the start of the school year to track and meet expected targets throughout the year.

A Model Approach to Enhancing Leadership Skills through Professional Development

(Breakout Session)

Description: This session will help Talent Development Offices, principal supervisors and district administrators develop a need to work together to create targeted professional development opportunities that are job-embedded and skills based. This session discusses various instruments to guide districts in the development of key programs.

Developing the Instructional Know How of the Principal Supervisor

(Breakout Session)

Description: This session provides principal supervisors with an instructional lens to understand the instructional shifts and the level of instructional know-how they need to support principals

Communication and Evaluations

Target Audience: Superintendents, District Administration, Principal Supervisors, and Principals

Breaking the District Communication Barriers

(Panel Presentation)

Description: Experts in the field of educational leadership and reform, including district leaders, discuss efforts to identify barriers and target efforts within district divisions to align resources around student achievement. The presenters will also focus on ways to involve all stakeholders, specifically principals, in feedback that will better target the needs of schools.

Working with a Flawed Principal Evaluation Tool

(Breakout Session)

Description: Participants in this session will reflect and examine the challenges of their current principal evaluation tool. The lead facilitator will explore specific leadership attributes that should be an area of focus during the coaching and evaluation of principals.

Engaging Principals through the Peer Review Process

(Breakout Session)

Description: This session focuses on having Principal Supervisors conduct interrater-reliability walk-throughs with principals to calibrate effective teaching practices.
